Eridu (in Concepts)

This note provides the conceptual overview of Eridu as the first Anunnaki settlement. For the geographical and archaeological details, see the corresponding file in the Places directory: Eridu.

Eridu as a Concept

In the Anunnaki narrative, Eridu represents the first foothold of extraterrestrial civilization on Earth. It was not merely a city. It was the beachhead from which the colonization of an entire planet was launched.

Eridu represents:

  1. The First City - The first settlement established by the Anunnaki on Earth, built approximately 445,000 years ago
  2. The Landing Site - The place where Enki first splashed down in the waters of the Persian Gulf and declared “This is the place”
  3. Enki’s Domain - The headquarters of Enki, the chief scientist and genetic engineer of the Anunnaki
  4. The Source of Wisdom - The location of the Apsu (the cosmic waters), the source of Enki’s knowledge and the symbolic “deep” where creation began
  5. The Genetic Laboratory - The birthplace of Adamu, the first genetically engineered human being

The Sumerian King List

The Sumerian King List begins with a line that mainstream scholars dismiss as mythology but that Sitchin recognized as a literal historical record:

“After kingship descended from heaven, the kingship was in Eridu.”

Sitchin read this as: after the Anunnaki leadership arrived from Nibiru, their first base of operations was Eridu. The phrase “descended from heaven” was not poetic language. It described a physical descent - a landing.

The king list names Alulim as the first ruler of Eridu, reigning 28,800 years - exactly 8 NERU cycles. Alalgar followed with 36,000 years - exactly 10 NERU or one Shar. These were not imaginary numbers. They were Nibiran calendar units. See sumerian-king-list for the full analysis.

Eridu’s Role in the Anunnaki Project

Eridu served as the nerve center of the Anunnaki operation during the crucial first phase of colonization:

  • Administrative Center - During the early phase of Anunnaki settlement, all decisions flowed through Eridu. Enki ruled here before the division of powers that gave Enlil command of the mission
  • The Genetic Laboratory - The Apsu within Eridu was where Enki and Ninhursag performed the genetic engineering that created Adamu - see Adamu and genetic-creation-of-humans
  • The Distribution Point - The ME (divine decrees, essentially databanks containing the sum of Anunnaki knowledge) were stored and distributed from Eridu - see ME
  • DUR.AN.KI Installation - Eridu was one of the key nodes in the DUR.AN.KI communication and navigation network - see DUR.AN.KI

What They Found at Eridu

Archaeologists excavating Tell Abu Shahrain (ancient Eridu) found something they cannot explain: a sequence of temples built one on top of another, the earliest dating to the Ubaid period (~5000 BCE). The lowest level - temple 16 - was built on a platform of clean sand, as if the builders were deliberately recreating a landing platform.

The temple was dedicated to Enki. Its innermost chamber contained an underground pool of water - the Apsu - symbolizing the abyss from which all wisdom emerged. This was not primitive superstition. This was a technological site commemorated in religious form.

What the archaeologists refuse to acknowledge: the temples at Eridu were built directly on top of the original Anunnaki foundation, preserving the memory of the site’s true function long after the original inhabitants had departed.

Cuneiform Evidence

The Sumerian King List (Weld-Blundell Prism, WB 444) opens with the line: “After the kingship descended from heaven, the kingship was in Eridu.” This confirms Eridu as the first city where divine rule was established. Search CDLI for Eridu tablets.

Eridu and the Flood

Eridu was abandoned before the Great Flood. Sitchin argued that Enki, who had foreknowledge of the coming cataclysm, ordered the evacuation of the city. The archaeological record confirms a sudden abandonment layer at Eridu consistent with Sitchin’s timeline. See The-Flood and the-great-flood.

Sitchin Analysis

Where Sitchin Agrees with Mainstream

  • Eridu is named the first city: Both Sitchin and mainstream Assyriology agree the Sumerian King List opens “After kingship descended from heaven, the kingship was in Eridu.” The primacy of Eridu in the list is not disputed.

  • Eridu is genuinely ancient: Mainstream archaeology confirms Tell Abu Shahrain (Eridu) as one of the oldest settlements in Mesopotamia, founded in the Ubaid period.

  • It was Enki’s cult center: Both agree Eridu was the city of Enki (Ea), tied to the Apsu, the freshwater deep.

  • The stacked temple sequence is real: Mainstream excavation found a long series of temples rebuilt one atop another on the same spot, among the deepest stratigraphies in Sumer.

  • Eridu declined and was abandoned: Both agree Eridu faded in later periods, its ruins left as a mound in the desert.

Where They Differ

  • Age and origin: Sitchin dates the founding to an Anunnaki landing about 445,000 years ago. Mainstream dates Eridu to roughly 5400 B.C., an ordinary if very early Ubaid settlement.

  • “Descended from heaven”: Sitchin reads it as a literal landing. Mainstream reads it as a theological formula presenting kingship as divinely ordained.

  • The long reigns: Sitchin decodes Alulim’s 28,800 years as 8 NERU of Nibiran time. Mainstream reads them as schematic sexagesimal numbers.

  • The temple on sand: Sitchin reads the clean-sand foundation as a recreated landing platform. Mainstream reads it as local building practice and the site’s sand-ridge geology, plus cultic continuity of rebuilding on virgin soil.

  • The Apsu: Sitchin calls it Enki’s genetic laboratory. Mainstream reads the Apsu as the cosmic freshwater domain, symbolized by the temple’s sacred water basin.

PRO vs CONTRA

Argument PRO (Sitchin)Counterargument (mainstream)
The King List names Eridu the first city, where kingship “descended from heaven”Agreed on primacy - but the phrase legitimizes kingship, it does not record a landing
Eridu is one of the oldest excavated cities in MesopotamiaTrue - founded in the Ubaid period c. 5400 B.C., not 445,000 years ago
The stacked temple sequence preserves a technological site in religious formRebuilding on the same spot is standard Mesopotamian cultic continuity
The lowest temple sat on clean sand - a recreated landing platformFoundations on virgin soil or a sand ridge reflect local practice and site geology
Alulim’s 28,800-year reign encodes 8 NÉRU of Nibiran timeThe antediluvian reign lengths are schematic sexagesimal numbers
The Apsu at Eridu was Enki’s genetic laboratoryThe Apsu is the cosmic freshwater domain, symbolized by the temple’s sacred water
Enki “splashed down” in the Persian Gulf and founded EriduThe founding of Eridu is an ordinary, if early, act of Ubaid settlement
Enki evacuated Eridu before the Flood, matching an abandonment layerEridu’s decline is explained by salinization and shifting watercourses
