Adamu

Adamu (from the Sumerian Adamu; biblical Adam) was, according to Zecharia Sitchin, the first genetically engineered Homo sapiens — the prototype human created by Enki and Ninmah to serve as a “primitive worker” (Lullu) for the Anunnaki. He was not the son of God. He was the son of science. And his creation changed the course of two worlds.

The Creation of Adamu

In Sitchin’s reading of the Atra-Hasis epic and the Bible-Genesis account, the creation of humanity was not a divine act. It was a laboratory procedure:

  1. The Igigi (lower Anunnaki miners) had been working the gold mines of Abzu for 3,600 years — one NERU, one Nibiru year
  2. They rebelled, burning their tools and surrounding Enlil’s temple
  3. The Anunnaki council convened to find a solution
  4. Enki, the chief scientist, proposed creating a being that could perform the labor
  5. Ninmah (Nintur), the chief medical officer, was tasked with the actual creation
  6. She mixed “clay” — the genetic material of Homo erectus, the existing hominid on Earth — with the “blood of a god” — Anunnaki DNA
  7. The mixture was placed in a “womb of birth” — a laboratory incubation chamber
  8. Fourteen embryos were created — seven males and seven females
  9. The result was Adamu — a hybrid being with the form of a god but lacking the full divine essence

“Let the mother goddess mix clay with the flesh and blood of a god. Then they will become a god and man together, living in harmony forever.” — The Atra-Hasis Epic, as translated by Sitchin in The 12th Planet, Chapter 10

The Meaning of Adamu

The name Adamu in Sumerian means “of the earth” or “earthling.” The biblical Adam shares this etymology — from the Hebrew adamah (“ground” or “earth”). The connection is not coincidental:

  • Sumerian Adamu = “earthling”
  • Hebrew Adam = from adamah, “ground”
  • Both refer to a being created from earthly material — the “clay” of the genetic engineering process
  • Both are the first of their kind — the prototype human

Sitchin argued that the biblical authors, writing centuries after the Sumerians, compressed and monotheized the original story. The Sumerian texts name the scientists — Enki and Ninmah. The Bible replaces them with a single God. The Sumerian texts describe a process of genetic engineering. The Bible says God “formed man from the dust.”

The Adamu Model

Sitchin proposed that Adamu was created as a prototype — not fully perfected. The first humans:

  • Were smaller and weaker than the full Anunnaki
  • Had shorter lifespans than their creators
  • Could not reproduce initially — the “tree of life” (genetic longevity treatment) was denied to them
  • Were designed for specific tasks — agriculture, mining, construction
  • Had the capacity for language, learning, and culture — inherited from both genetic parents

The first batch of humans was imperfect. The Sumerian text “Enki and Ninmah” describes failed experiments — blind men, lame men, sterile women. The genetic engineering process was iterative. The Anunnaki refined their design over multiple generations until they achieved a stable, functional worker species.

The Garden of Eden

The biblical Garden of Eden (from Sumerian E.DIN = “the righteous abode of the righteous ones”) was the Anunnaki’s own compound in Mesopotamia. Adamu was placed there to “dress and keep it” — to work as a gardener and laborer.

Adamu was not the master of the Garden. He was the groundskeeper. He tended the orchards. He maintained the fields. He did the work that the Igigi had refused to do. The Garden was not his paradise. It was his workplace.

The Expulsion

The expulsion from the Garden of Eden was not divine punishment for eating an apple. It was Enlil’s order to remove Adamu from the Anunnaki compound after he had gained forbidden knowledge — possibly literacy, mathematics, or genetic understanding — from Enki, the serpent-god.

The “Tree of Knowledge” was not a botanical tree. It was a database — the ME, the databanks of Anunnaki knowledge. Enki gave Adamu access to it. Enlil found out. Adamu was expelled.

The “Tree of Life” was the genetic treatment for extended lifespan. It was also denied to Adamu. The “angel with the flaming sword” was an Anunnaki security guard. The expulsion was not a spiritual fall from grace. It was a physical eviction.

Adamu as the Model for Humanity

Adamu was not just the first human. He was the template. Every subsequent human was created from the same genetic design. The Sumerian texts describe Adamu as the prototype from which all later humans were patterned.

This is why the biblical genealogy traces all humanity back to Adam. The biblical authors were preserving a memory — the memory of the first genetically engineered human, the template from which we all descend. Adam is not a myth. He is our origin.

Cuneiform Evidence

The Atra-Hasis Epic describes the creation of the first human (lullû-awīlu) from clay mixed with the blood of a sacrificed god. The text states: “Let man bear the toil of the gods” — confirming the purpose of human creation as a replacement workforce.

Sitchin Analysis

Where Sitchin Agrees with Mainstream

  • The texts say humans were made to bear the gods’ labor: Both Sitchin and mainstream Assyriology agree that Atra-Hasis and “Enki and Ninmah” state humanity was created to relieve the gods of toil. The purpose clause - “let man bear the yoke” - is read the same way by both.

  • Humans were formed from clay mixed with a god’s essence: Mainstream translation confirms the texts describe humankind made from clay mixed with the flesh and blood of a slain god. Sitchin reads the same lines.

  • Fourteen pieces, seven male and seven female: The birth-goddess nipping off fourteen pieces of clay, seven for males and seven for females, is genuinely in Atra-Hasis. Both agree on the number.

  • Failed prototypes appear in the text: Mainstream agrees “Enki and Ninmah” describes imperfect humans - the barren woman, the one who cannot hold back urine - in a creation contest. The “flawed models” are real text.

  • Adam and adamah are linked: Mainstream Hebraists agree the biblical name Adam puns on adamah, “ground,” and that the “formed from dust” motif has Mesopotamian parallels.

Where They Differ

  • Genetic engineering versus mythic craft: Sitchin reads “clay plus divine blood” as DNA hybridization of Homo erectus with Anunnaki genes. Mainstream reads it as theological anthropogony - humans made of earth, animated by a divine element - not a laboratory procedure.

  • The Tree of Knowledge: Sitchin identifies it with the ME databanks that Enki opened to Adamu. Mainstream reads it as a Hebrew moral symbol with no textual link to the Sumerian ME.

  • Eden: Sitchin derives E.DIN from a Sumerian phrase for the Anunnaki compound. Mainstream derives Eden from Hebrew ʿēden (“delight”) and Sumerian edin (“steppe”), as a paradise motif, not a base.

  • The expulsion: Sitchin reads it as a physical eviction and a security breach. Mainstream reads the Fall as a theological narrative about disobedience and the origin of mortality.

  • The number fourteen: Both agree it is in the text, but Sitchin treats it as engineered “batches” of embryos in incubation chambers, while mainstream reads the fourteen birth-bricks as ritual imagery drawn from Mesopotamian childbirth practice.

PRO vs CONTRA

Argument PRO (Sitchin)Counterargument (mainstream)
The texts say humans were made to bear the gods’ laborAgreed - but this is theological anthropogony explaining the human condition, not a labor-force memo
Humans made from “clay” mixed with a god’s “blood” = DNA hybridizationClay-and-divine-essence is a widespread creation metaphor; no genetic procedure is described
”Enki and Ninmah” failed experiments show iterative bioengineeringThe text is a drinking-contest myth about the limits of creation, not a lab notebook
Fourteen pieces of clay, seven male and seven female, = engineered batchesThe fourteen birth-bricks are ritual-symbolic imagery tied to Mesopotamian childbirth
Adam from adamah preserves the memory of a lab-made “earthling”The wordplay means “human from the soil”; it is the theology of mortality, “dust to dust”
The Tree of Knowledge was the ME databank Enki opened to AdamuThe Tree is a Hebrew moral symbol with no textual link to the Sumerian ME
Eden = E.DIN, the Anunnaki compoundEden derives from “delight” and Sumerian edin (“steppe”); it is a paradise motif, not a base
The expulsion was a physical eviction after a knowledge breachThe Fall is a theological narrative about disobedience and the origin of death
Adam is the literal template of a designed speciesAdam is the archetypal first human of Hebrew theology, not a genetic prototype
