Anunnaki vs. Nephilim

The terms Anunnaki and Nephilim (also spelled Nefilim) are often used interchangeably in popular culture, but Zecharia Sitchin made a careful distinction between them. Understanding this distinction is essential for following his narrative — and for understanding why the Bible calls the same beings both “gods” and “giants.”

The Anunnaki

The term Anunnaki (Sumerian: A.NUN.NA.KI, “those who from heaven to Earth came”) refers to the pantheon of beings from Nibiru:

Origin: From the planet Nibiru — an extraterrestrial civilization with advanced technology
Nature: Extraterrestrial, long-lived (one Nibiru year = 3,600 Earth years), but mortal
Number: Approximately 50 senior gods, plus 300 Igigi (lower-ranking workers)
Hierarchy: Led by Anu, divided into factions (Enki’s and Enlil’s)
Role: Colonizers of Earth, miners of gold, creators of humanity
Technology: Spacecraft (SHEM), genetic engineering, nuclear weapons, communication networks (DUR.AN.KI)

The Nephilim

The term Nephilim (Hebrew: Nephilim, “those who have fallen” or “those who were cast down”) appears in the Bible in a famously cryptic passage:

“The Nephilim were on the earth in those days — and also afterward — when the sons of God went in to the daughters of humans, who bore children to them. These were the heroes of old, warriors of renown.” (Genesis 6:4)

Sitchin’s reading was radical and precise:

“Sons of God” (Bene Elohim) = The Anunnaki — the extraterrestrial gods
“Daughters of humans” = Human women
“Nephilim” = The hybrid offspring of Anunnaki-human unions
“Those who have fallen” = Not fallen from grace, but those who came down from the sky
“Heroes of old, warriors of renown” = The semi-divine kings and warriors of antediluvian times

This distinction is crucial. The Anunnaki are the rulers. The Nephilim are their children. The Anunnaki come from Nibiru. The Nephilim are born on Earth.

The Three Categories

Sitchin’s framework actually creates three categories of beings in the ancient world:

The Nephilim occupied the space between gods and humans. They were the ruling class of the antediluvian world — the kings who ruled for thousands of years, the heroes who performed legendary deeds. They were stronger, larger, and longer-lived than humans. But they were not gods. They were the product of forbidden unions.

The Confusion

The confusion between the two terms arises because:

Both “descended” — The Anunnaki descended from Nibiru to Earth. The Nephilim are “descended” from the Anunnaki through human mothers. Both are “those who came down” — but from different heights.
The Greek Mistranslation — When the Hebrew Bible was translated into Greek (the Septuagint), the translators rendered Nephilim as gigantes — “giants.” This created the enduring myth that the Nephilim were literally giants. They may have been larger than average humans, but the term originally referred to their origin, not their size.
Popular Culture — Modern media has conflated Anunnaki, Nephilim, ancient astronauts, and giants into one blurry concept. YouTube videos claim “the Anunnaki are the Nephilim” and “the Nephilim were giants.” Both statements are wrong.
The Vatican Suppression — Sitchin suggested that the confusion was not accidental. The monotheistic religions deliberately obscured the distinction to erase the evidence of extraterrestrial origins. If the Anunnaki are real, the Bible is not the word of God — it is a history of alien colonization.

The Mixed Marriages

The interbreeding between Anunnaki and humans was a major point of contention in Anunnaki politics. Enlil opposed it. He saw humans as tools — useful for labor, dangerous if elevated to near-equal status. Enki supported it. He saw potential in humanity and may have had genuine affection for his creations.

The Genesis 6 passage — “the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful” — records Enlil’s perspective. The interbreeding was a violation of the natural order. It had to stop. The Flood was Enlil’s solution — not just to the noise of humanity, but to the proliferation of hybrids.

Cuneiform Evidence

The Sumerian King List records antediluvian kings with reigns of thousands of years — the Nephilim rulers who governed before the Flood. Their extraordinary lifespans are consistent with Sitchin’s reading of them as Anunnaki-human hybrids.

Where Sitchin Agrees with Mainstream

Genesis 6 really names the Nephilim: Both Sitchin and mainstream scholarship accept that Genesis 6:1-4 speaks of the Nephilim, the “sons of God,” and the daughters of men who bore “mighty men of renown.” The passage is genuine, if famously terse.
The Septuagint rendered Nephilim as “giants”: Both agree the Greek translators used gigantes, which fixed the giant tradition in Western culture. This translation history is not disputed.
The antediluvian kings had enormous reigns: Mainstream and Sitchin agree the Sumerian King List assigns pre-Flood rulers reigns of thousands of years. The figures are in the text.
Anunnaki is a real collective divine term: Both agree Anunna(ki) is a genuine Sumerian designation for a group of gods.
The name relates to “falling”: Both connect Nephilim to the Hebrew root naphal, “to fall,” even if they read the sense differently.

Where They Differ

What A.NUN.NA.KI means: Sitchin glosses it “those who from heaven to Earth came.” Assyriologists read Anunna as “offspring” or “seed of An,” the sky-god - “princely offspring,” not “those who descended.”
The “sons of God”: Sitchin says they were flesh-and-blood extraterrestrials. Mainstream reads them as divine-council beings, or as Sethite or dynastic lines - not aliens.
The Nephilim: Sitchin says they were Anunnaki-human genetic hybrids. Mainstream reads them as mighty warriors of legend; the text describes no genetics or hybridization.
The long reigns: Sitchin reads them as hybrid longevity. Mainstream reads them as schematic, sexagesimally inflated numbers - a numerological convention of king lists.
The conflation: Sitchin says religions deliberately blurred Anunnaki and Nephilim to hide extraterrestrial origins. Mainstream traces the fallen-angel and giant readings to Second Temple literature such as 1 Enoch, developed openly.
