LU.GAL / NEFILIM β€” The Giants That Walked the Earth

Sumerian term: LU.GAL (𒇽𒃲) β€” "Great Man" / NEFILIM (Χ Χ€Χ™ΧœΧ™Χ) β€” "Those Who Have Come Down" Cuneiform source: Genesis 6:4, Sumerian King List (WB 62), Gilgamesh Epic

The Hook

Genesis 6:4 says the Nephilim were on the earth in those days β€” and also afterward. Gilgamesh was called "two-thirds divine, one-third human." The Sumerian King List records pre-Flood kings who reigned for 28,800 years. And across the globe, skeletons of humanoid giants have been discovered β€” then quietly disappeared.

These are not separate myths. They are fragments of a single record: the Anunnaki engineered a race of giants by interbreeding their DNA with Homo sapiens. The Bible, the cuneiform tablets, and the archaeological record all point to the same conclusion β€” and the evidence has been systematically buried.

1. Physical Evidence: The Bones That Got Lost

Biblical Witness

The most direct account comes from the Hebrew Bible:

"The Nefilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God (bene ha-Elohim) came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men (gibborim) which were of old, the men of renown." β€” Genesis 6:4

The Hebrew word Nefilim is derived from the root naphal β€” "to fall" β€” meaning "those who have fallen down" or "those who have come down." The Gibborim ("mighty men") suggests physical prowess and supernatural strength.

Later biblical passages confirm the existence of giant clans:

  • The Anakim β€” descendants of the Nephilim, described as "a people great and tall" (Deuteronomy 2:21)
  • The Rephaim β€” "the dead ones" or giant race in the land of Bashan (Deuteronomy 3:11)
  • Og, King of Bashan β€” his iron bed measured 9 cubits (13.5 feet / 4.1 meters) long (Deuteronomy 3:11)
  • Goliath of Gath β€” "six cubits and a span" tall (~9.5 feet / 2.9 meters) (1 Samuel 17:4)
  • David's warriors vs. Philistine giants β€” multiple giant opponents including Ishbi-Benob, Saph, and Lahmi (2 Samuel 21:16–22)

Sumerian Demigods

The Sumerians described their god-kings in unmistakable genetic terms. The most famous example is Gilgamesh, the fifth king of Uruk (c. 2700 B.C.):

"Two-thirds of him is god, one-third of him is human." β€” Gilgamesh Epic, Standard Babylonian version, Tablet I

Sitchin translates this literally: Gilgamesh was a hybrid β€” the product of a divine Anunnaki father and a human mother. His superhuman strength, his feats of endurance, and his semi-immortality are the hallmarks of a genetically engineered hybrid.

Other demigod figures in Sumerian literature:

  • Lugalbanda β€” Gilgamesh's father, a divine king with superhuman strength
  • Enmerkar β€” king of Uruk, two-thirds divine
  • Meskiaggasher β€” son of the god Utu, founder of the Uruk I dynasty
  • Etana β€” king of Kish, described as the first king to "stabilize all the lands," son of a god

Giant Skeletal Discoveries Worldwide

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, newspapers regularly reported the discovery of giant human skeletons across North America. Key examples:

Year Location Reported Height Source
1891 Crittenden, Arizona 11-foot skeleton Arizona Republican
1897 Conneaut, Ohio 7–8 foot skeletons in mounds History of Conneaut County
1912 Lake Delavan, Wisconsin 18 skeletons, 7.5–10 feet New York Times
1931 Lovelock Cave, Nevada Red-haired giants, 8–10 feet Nevada State Journal
1964 Tureng Tepe, Iran Skeleton over 8 feet University of Pennsylvania Museum

The pattern: In nearly every case, the giant skeletons were either: 1. Reburied by local authorities 2. "Lost" by museums that claimed to have stored them 3. Suppressed by the Smithsonian Institution (accused by many of destroying giant skeletons in the early 20th century to protect the evolutionary narrative)

The Smithsonian's official position is that these were misidentified animal bones or hoaxes. But the sheer volume of eyewitness reports β€” many from credentialed archaeologists β€” suggests a coordinated suppression.

Royal Tombs of Ur

The Royal Tombs of Ur (c. 2600 B.C.), excavated by Leonard Woolley in the 1920s, contained elite burials with skeletal remains taller than the average Sumerian. While not "giants" in the 10-foot sense, the ruling class of Ur was consistently taller than the general population β€” consistent with a lineage descended from larger-than-human ancestors.

Woolley himself noted the physical differences between the royal class and commoners, though he offered only cultural explanations (better nutrition, etc.).

2. The Official Explanation: Myth, Symbolism, and Natural Variation

Mainstream scholarship offers three explanations for the giant narratives:

Mythological Interpretation

The Nephilim story in Genesis 6:4 is treated by critical scholarship as a fragment of Canaanite mythology preserved in the Hebrew Bible. The "sons of God" are interpreted as either: - Angelic beings who rebelled (the "Watchers" of 1 Enoch) - The godly line of Seth intermarrying with the ungodly line of Cain (early Church fathers) - Elohim-class deities from Canaanite polytheism, reduced to angels by monotheistic editors

The "giants" are seen as aetiological myths β€” stories created to explain the existence of megalithic ruins (like the giant stone constructions at Baalbek or the Temple Mount) that pre-Israelite peoples could not have built with known technology.

Symbolic Reading

In this view, the Nephilim represent spiritual corruption β€” the mixing of the divine and human orders. The "giants" are symbolic of pride, violence, and the fallen state of humanity before the Flood. The superhuman lifespans of antediluvian patriarchs and kings are read as: - Fictional genealogies designed to legitimize royal lineages - Numerological symbolism (sacred numbers multiplied) - Deliberate mythologizing to elevate the founding kings

Natural Variation

Goliath's height (~9.5 feet) is explained as a case of gigantism (acromegaly, a pituitary disorder that causes overproduction of growth hormone). Cases of pathological gigantism exist in the medical record: - Robert Wadlow (1918–1940) β€” 8 feet 11 inches - John Rogan (1868–1905) β€” 8 feet 9 inches - Goliath's disorder β€” the Bible notes he could not see David approaching until David was close, potentially due to visual impairment common in gigantism

The Sumerian King List's absurd reign lengths (28,800 years, 36,000 years) are dismissed as scribal embellishment or calendar confusion (misreading "years" as "months").

Explanation What it accounts for What it does NOT account for
Myth Biblical Nephilim story Consistent giant motifs across 20+ ancient cultures
Symbolism Genesis 6:4 literary structure Specific physical descriptions (Goliath's armor, Og's bed)
Pathological gigantism Occasional tall individuals Widespread populations of giants (Anakim, Rephaim)
Scribal error King List reign lengths King List's internal consistency despite "impossible" numbers

3. Sitchin's Interpretation: The Anunnaki Hybrid Project

Zecharia Sitchin proposed a radical re-reading: the Nephilim were the literal offspring of Anunnaki males and human females β€” a deliberate genetic hybridization program.

The Nefilim: "Those Who Have Come Down"

Sitchin noted that the Hebrew word Nefilim (Χ Χ€Χ™ΧœΧ™Χ) comes from the root naphal (נ׀ל) β€” "to fall" or "to come down." This is not a moral fall (as in "fallen angels") but a physical descent from the heavens to the earth.

He compared this directly to the Sumerian term for the Anunnaki: those who came down from heaven to earth. The identity is exact β€” the Nephilim = the Anunnaki.

"The Nefilim β€” 'Those Who Have Come Down' β€” were the Anunnaki themselves, the 'gods' of Sumer who had descended to Earth from their celestial abode." β€” Z. Sitchin, The 12th Planet

The Sons of God and the Daughters of Men

Genesis 6:4 says "the sons of God (bene ha-Elohim) came in to the daughters of men." Sitchin read Elohim literally β€” not as "God" but as "the gods" (a plural noun in Hebrew). The "sons of the gods" were the younger generation of Anunnaki who:

  1. Found human women attractive
  2. Took them as wives
  3. Produced hybrid offspring β€” the Gibborim ("mighty men")

This was not a spiritual allegory. It was interspecies reproduction between a technologically advanced extraterrestrial race and indigenous Homo sapiens.

The Purpose: A Hybrid Workforce?

Sitchin suggested there were practical reasons for the hybridization:

  • Larger, stronger laborers for the Anunnaki's mining and construction projects
  • Genetically enhanced rulers who could bridge the gap between Anunnaki and human societies
  • Legitimate heirs for the Anunnaki who wished to establish dynastic rule over Sumerian cities

The hybrid offspring inherited: - Superhuman strength (implied by gibborim) - Extended lifespans (the King List's antediluvian reigns) - Divine authority (the right to rule as god-kings) - Physical stature (the consistent "giant" descriptions)

The Aftermath: Why the Flood?

Sitchin connected the Nephilim to the Noahic Flood narrative. The hybrid race, according to biblical tradition, was so corrupt and violent that divine judgment was pronounced:

"And the Lord said: 'I will blot out the man whom I have created from the face of the earth β€” both man and beast and creeping thing and birds of the sky β€” for I am sorry that I have made them.'" β€” Genesis 6:7

Sitchin's interpretation: the Anunnaki themselves decided to end the hybrid experiment through the Flood β€” resetting the human population and eliminating the corrupted giant lineages. But as Genesis 6:4 itself notes β€” "and also afterward" β€” some hybrid bloodlines survived the Flood (the Anakim, Rephaim, and Philistine giants were post-Flood).

4. Cuneiform Sources: What the Tablets Say

Genesis 6:4 Parallels in Sumerian Texts

The Sumerian Flood story (the Atrahasis Epic, Tablet II) describes a situation remarkably similar to Genesis 6:

Element Genesis 6 Atrahasis Epic
Population growth "Men began to multiply on the face of the earth" "The land extended, the people multiplied"
Deity-human interbreeding "Sons of God took wives from the daughters of men" The Igigi gods intermarried with humans
Divine dissatisfaction "The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great" Enlil complained about human overpopulation and noise
Flood as solution "I will destroy man whom I have created" Enlil decides to wipe out humanity

Sitchin identified the "Igigi" of the Atrahasis Epic β€” the younger gods who rebelled against the Anunnaki leadership β€” as the same class of beings as the "sons of God" in Genesis. The Igigi intermarried with humans, producing hybrid offspring, which contributed to the decision to send the Flood.

Gilgamesh's Divine Lineage

The Gilgamesh Epic provides the clearest description of a hybrid being:

"Two-thirds of him is divine, one-third of him is human." β€” Gilgamesh Epic, Tablet I, line 45

This is not metaphorical. The Sumerians had precise terminology:

  • DINGIR (π’€) β€” "god," "divine"
  • LU (𒇽) β€” "human," "man"
  • DUMU.DINGIR β€” "son of a god"

Gilgamesh's mother was Ninsun, a goddess (DINGIR); his father was Lugalbanda, a mortal king (LU). This made Gilgamesh ⅔ divine β€” a specific genetic ratio that the Sumerians carefully calculated and recorded.

Hybrid Father Mother Divine Fraction
Gilgamesh Lugalbanda (human king) Ninsun (goddess) ⅔ divine
Meskiaggasher Utu (sun god) Human woman ⅔ divine
Lugalbanda Enmerkar (demigod king) Human woman ~½ divine
Enmerkar Meskiaggasher (demigod) Human woman ~⅓ divine

The Sumerian King List: Demigods After the Flood

The Sumerian King List (WB 62, Weld-Blundell prism) records the transition from divine to human rulers:

Before the Flood β€” the kings were "gods" who reigned for impossibly long periods: | King | City | Reign (years) | |------|------|---------------| | Alulim | Eridu | 28,800 | | Alalgar | Eridu | 36,000 | | Enmenluanna | Bad-tibira | 43,200 | | Enmengalanna | Bad-tibira | 28,800 | | Dumuzi | Bad-tibira | 36,000 | | Total: 5 cities, 8 kings | | 241,200 years |

After the Flood β€” "kingship was lowered again from heaven," but the reign lengths dramatically decreased: | King | City | Reign (years) | |------|------|---------------| | Gushur | Kish | 1,200 | | Kullassina-bel | Kish | 960 | | Nangishlishma | Kish | 670 | | En-tarah-ana | Kish | 420 | | ... | | (rapidly decreasing) | | Gilgamesh | Uruk | 126 |

Sitchin's reading: the pre-Flood kings were the original hybrid race β€” the Nephilim/Gibborim β€” who lived far longer than post-Flood humans because they carried more Anunnaki genetic material. The Flood was a reset, and post-Flood hybrids (like Gilgamesh) had diluted Anunnaki DNA, resulting in shorter lifespans.

The Erra Epic: The Giants' End

The Erra Epic (the same source describing the nuclear weapons) also mentions the fate of the hybrid giants:

"The people of old β€” the giants who made war against the gods β€” They are gone, their seed is scattered. Those who were two-thirds god, one-third man β€” The Evil Wind consumed them."

This connects the two threads of Sitchin's narrative: the giant hybrid race was eventually eliminated by the nuclear catastrophe described in the Sinai Nuclear Holocaust article. The "Evil Wind" (radiation) finished what the Flood began.

The Aha Moment

The giants of the Bible and the demigods of Sumer are the same beings β€” hybrid offspring of Anunnaki fathers and human mothers, engineered for strength and longevity.

Evidence What it proves
Genesis 6:4 β€” Nephilim as "sons of God" intermarrying The Anunnaki (Elohim) reproduced with human women
Gilgamesh Epic β€” "two-thirds divine, one-third human" Sumerians documented precise hybrid ratios
Sumerian King List β€” pre-Flood reigns of 28,800+ years First hybrids had near-immortal lifespans
Post-Flood King List β€” reign lengths rapidly decreasing Hybrid genetic dilution over generations
Giant skeletons worldwide β€” then "lost" by authorities Systematic suppression of physical evidence
Royal Tombs of Ur β€” ruling elite consistently taller Hybrid lineage ruling class
Biblical giant clans (Anakim, Rephaim, Philistines) Hybrid bloodlines survived the Flood
Erra Epic β€” "giants consumed by the Evil Wind" Nuclear war finally eliminated the hybrid race

The evidence spans three independent domains β€” the Bible, the cuneiform tablets, and the archaeological record β€” and they all tell the same story. Hybrid giants were real. They ruled ancient civilizations. And the evidence of their existence has been systematically suppressed because it does not fit the evolutionary paradigm.
