Sumer β€” The Original Religion

Sumerian religion was the original source from which all later Near Eastern religions derived, according to Zecharia Sitchin. The Anunnaki pantheon of Sumer was not a mythological invention but a historical record of real beings.

The Pantheon

The Sumerian pantheon consisted of the great Anunnaki β€” gods who lived in cities, demanded worship and offerings, and directly intervened in human affairs. The chief gods were:

  • Anu β€” Sky god, king of Nibiru
  • Enlil β€” Lord of the wind, commander of Earth
  • Enki β€” Lord of the waters, creator of humanity
  • Ninmah β€” Mother goddess, geneticist
  • Inanna β€” Goddess of love and war
  • Utu β€” Sun god, spaceport commander

Sumerian Religious Practices

  • Temples (Γ©) as the homes of the gods
  • Ziggurats as artificial mountains connecting heaven and Earth
  • The sacred marriage ritual
  • Divination and astrology
  • The New Year festival (Akitu)

Sitchin's View

Sitchin argued that Sumerian religion was not "religion" in the modern sense β€” it was the literal administration of Anunnaki rule over humanity.
