Inanna cyklus (The Inanna Cycle)

Selected quotations from the cycle of narratives surrounding Inanna (Ishtar), the goddess of love and war.

The Descent of Inanna

"From the great above she set her mind toward the great below. The Lady of Heaven abandoned heaven, abandoned earth, and descended to the underworld."

"At the first gate, her shugurra, the crown of the plain, was removed. 'Why, O gatekeeper? It is the rites of the queen of the below.' At the second gate, her lapis lazuli rod was removed..."

"She was brought naked and bowed low before the throne of Ereshkigal. The queen of the underworld raised her eyes β€” and Inanna was turned into a corpse, hung on a hook."

Inanna and the ME

"Inanna took the ME into her boat and sailed away. Enki, sobering, saw what had happened and sent his great messenger Isimud to retrieve them."

"But Inanna had already brought the ME to Uruk, her city, where she established them forever."

The Courtship of Dumuzi

"He stood before her, the shepherd Dumuzi, and Inanna opened the door. 'Come, my beloved,' she said, 'let us enter the garden.'"

"My vulva, the horn, the boat of heaven β€” I am the young woman, the Inanna, who celebrates the sacred marriage."
