Genetic Engineering

Sumerian name: LULLU (𒇽𒇽) β€” "Primitive Worker"

The genetic engineering of humanity is the central theme of Zecharia Sitchin's Earth Chronicles. Sitchin argued that the Anunnaki possessed advanced knowledge of genetics and used it to create Homo sapiens as a worker species approximately 300,000 years ago.

The Sumerian Account

According to the Atra Hasis epic, the gods created humanity from clay mixed with the "flesh and blood" of a slain deity:

"Let the mother goddess mix clay with the flesh and blood of a god. Then they will become a god and man together, living in harmony forever."

Sitchin read this as a scientific description of genetic engineering:

  • Clay = Existing hominid life (Homo erectus)
  • Flesh and blood of a god = Anunnaki DNA
  • Mixing = In vitro fertilization or genetic modification
  • "A god and man together" = A hybrid creature with both Anunnaki and Earthly heritage

The Primitive Worker (Lullu)

The being created was called the Lullu ("primitive worker") β€” a hybrid designed to perform the heavy labor that the Igigi had been forced to do.

Sitchin connected his narrative to the paleontological record:

"The sudden appearance of Homo sapiens approximately 300,000 years ago, with a brain capacity and cognitive abilities far beyond any preceding hominid, is exactly what one would expect from an external intervention β€” not from gradual evolution."

He pointed to: - The "missing link" between Homo erectus and Homo sapiens - The sudden explosion of human cognitive capacity (the "Great Leap Forward") - The mitochondrial "Eve" dating to approximately 200,000 years ago - The relative youth of the human genome compared to other species

The Creation Team

The genetic engineering project involved several Anunnaki:

Participant Role
Enki Project leader, proposed the idea
Ninmah (Nintur) Chief geneticist, performed the laboratory work
Utu Possibly involved in the oversight

The Failed Experiments

The "Debate between Enki and Ninmah" describes the creation of various imperfect humans β€” the blind, the lame, the sterile. Sitchin read this as a record of failed early experiments before the successful creation of viable Homo sapiens.

Modern Parallels

Sitchin's work anticipated several developments in modern genetics:

  • The Human Genome Project (completed 2003)
  • CRISPR gene editing technology
  • The study of Neanderthal and Denisovan DNA in modern humans
  • Theories of "directed panspermia"
