The 12th Planet

The 12th Planet, published in 1976 by Harper, is the foundational book of Zecharia Sitchin's Earth Chronicles series. It introduced the world to Sitchin's thesis that a twelfth planet (counting the Sun, Moon, and ten known planets) named Nibiru orbits the Sun every 3,600 years and is the homeworld of the Anunnaki.

Overview

The book is structured in 14 chapters, each building upon the last to construct Sitchin's complete cosmological and historical narrative:

  1. The Endless Beginning β€” The question of human origins
  2. The Sudden Civilization β€” The unexplained emergence of Sumerian civilization
  3. The Gods of Heaven and Earth β€” The Sumerian pantheon
  4. The Myth of Creation β€” Sitchin's reading of the Enuma Elish
  5. The Clash of the Titans β€” The celestial battle between Nibiru and Tiamat
  6. The Witness β€” Evidence of the celestial collision
  7. The Planet of the Crossing β€” The nature and orbit of Nibiru
  8. The Epic of Creation β€” A complete translation of the Enuma Elish
  9. The Deluge β€” The Great Flood as a recurring celestial event
  10. The Tower of Babel β€” The spaceport and the confusion of languages
  11. The Patriarchs β€” The biblical patriarchs and their Sumerian origins
  12. The Land of the Gods β€” The geography of the Anunnaki settlements
  13. The Days of the Gods β€” Calendars and the precessional cycle
  14. The End of the Days β€” Prophecy and future return of Nibiru

Key Arguments

The Sumerian Civilization

Sitchin argues that Sumerian civilization appeared "suddenly, fully formed" around 3800 BCE, with no identifiable precursor. He cites the sudden appearance of writing, mathematics, astronomy, law, and complex social structures as evidence of external intervention.

"The Sumerians knew of all the planets now known, including Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto β€” and they claimed that there was a twelfth celestial body, the Planet of the Crossing, which they called Nibiru."

The Anunnaki Arrival

According to Sitchin, approximately 450,000 years ago, the Anunnaki traveled to Earth from Nibiru. They established a base in the E.Din (the "Garden of Eden") and began mining gold. The lower-ranking Igigi revolted after 3,600 years (one Nibiran year), leading the chief scientist Enki to propose creating a "primitive worker" β€” humanity.

The Nibiru Cycle

Sitchin argued that Nibiru's 3,600-year orbit explains much of Earth's historical and geological patterns. Each approach of Nibiru (a "crossing") coincided with major events β€” the Great Flood, the rise of civilizations, and future cataclysms.

Impact and Legacy

The 12th Planet became an international bestseller and was translated into over 20 languages. It inspired a generation of alternative researchers and remains the cornerstone of the ancient astronaut hypothesis. Critics from mainstream academia have challenged Sitchin's translations and conclusions, but the book's influence on popular culture and alternative archaeology is undeniable.
