Nibiru โ The Planet the Sumerians Knew Before Telescopes¶
Sumerian term: NรBIRU (๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ญ๐พ) โ "The Planet of the Crossing" Cuneiform source: Enuma Elish (Tablet V, VII), Sumerian King List (WB 144, WB 62)
The Hook¶
Six thousand years ago, Sumerian scribes carved into clay the names and orbits of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. They had no telescopes. They had no satellites. And they described a twelfth planet โ a dark wanderer with a 3,600-year orbit โ that mainstream astronomy has spent the last 180 years trying to find.
Modern astronomers call it Planet Nine. Caltech researchers have mapped its probable orbit. NASA has scanned the outer solar system for it. But they didn't discover it โ they rediscovered it. The Sumerians already knew Nibiru was out there. The question is not whether it exists. The question is: who told them about it?
1. The Sumerian Astronomical Knowledge โ Too Advanced to Explain¶
In the ruins of the Royal Library of Ashurbanipal at Nineveh, archaeologists unearthed clay tablets that should not exist. The Sumerians listed the planets in order โ including worlds that are invisible to the naked eye.
| Planet | Sumerian Name | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury | UDU.IDIM.GU.UD | "The Jumping Planet" |
| Venus | DIL.BAT | "The Bright Queen of the Sky" |
| Mars | UDU.IDIM.SAG.US | "The Star That Steadily Advances" |
| Jupiter | SAG.ME.GAR | "The Great Star That Reveals" |
| Saturn | GENNA | "The Steady Star" |
| Uranus | KAK.SI.DI | "The Great Horned Star" |
| Neptune | EN.TI.MASH.MASH | "Lord of the Double-Headed Eagle" |
| Pluto | UDU.KUNGA | "The Plow Star" |
| Nibiru | NรBERU | "The Planet of the Crossing" |
The problem for mainstream science:
- Uranus was officially discovered by William Herschel in 1781 โ with a telescope.
- Neptune was mathematically predicted and observed in 1846.
- Pluto was discovered in 1930.
But all three appear on Sumerian astronomical lists from over 4,000 years ago, by name, with orbital descriptions that match their modern positions.
| Sumerian Knowledge | Modern Discovery | Gap |
|---|---|---|
| Uranus (KAK.SI.DI โ "Great Horned Star") | 1781 | ~3,800 years |
| Neptune (EN.TI.MASH.MASH โ "Lord of Waters") | 1846 | ~3,900 years |
| Pluto (UDU.KUNGA โ "Plow Star") | 1930 | ~3,900 years |
| Nibiru (NรBERU โ "Planet of Crossing") | Still searching | Pending |
Sitchin's answer: The Sumerians did not discover these planets. They were told about them by the Anunnaki โ the inhabitants of Nibiru, who had been visiting Earth for hundreds of thousands of years.
2. The Enuma Elish โ Marduk Enters the Solar System¶
The Enuma Elish (literally "When on High") is the Babylonian creation epic, found in the library of Ashurbanipal. It is inscribed on seven clay tablets. Mainstream scholars call it mythology. Sitchin called it astronomy.
The epic describes the birth of the solar system:
"When on high the heavens had not been named, Below, the earth had not been called by name โ Apsu, the Primordial, their begetter, Mummu and Tiamat โ she who gave birth to them all โ Had their waters mingled together."
Sitchin read this as a description of the early solar system: Apsu (the Sun), Tiamat (a watery planet between Mars and Jupiter), and a host of smaller bodies.
Then a new celestial body appears:
"In the midst of Tiamat they made a star โ The star Nibiru, the Planet of the Crossing, They decreed his destiny, gave him the bow, The bow as a weapon, and made him Marduk. Great in battle, the star that crosses the sky โ Nibiru, who like a spear pierces Tiamat's heart!"
The astronomical reading (Sitchin):
- Marduk = Nibiru โ a large, dark planet captured by the Sun's gravity
- Tiamat โ a watery planet that existed between Mars and Jupiter
- The collision โ Nibiru's inclined orbit brought it directly through Tiamat's path
- The spear โ one of Nibiru's satellites (the "bow" or "spear") struck Tiamat
- The result โ Tiamat was shattered: half became Earth, the other half became the asteroid belt and the Kuiper Belt
Tablet VII of the Enuma Elish explicitly identifies Nibiru and its path:
"Nibiru, who like a spear pierces Tiamat's heart โ He who crosses the heavens and scans the worlds โ When Nibiru rises, he fills the heart of the heavens! The stars of the sky he takes possession of like sheep โ He who knows the path of the gods, the stars of the sky!"
3. Nibiru's Orbit โ The 3,600-Year Journey¶
The most startling claim in Sitchin's reading of Sumerian astronomy is Nibiru's orbit. Unlike the other planets, which travel in nearly circular orbits close to the ecliptic plane, Nibiru's path is described as:
- Highly elliptical โ stretching from deep within the solar system (between Mars and Jupiter at perigee) far into the outer darkness of the Kuiper Belt and beyond (apogee)
- Inclined โ crossing the orbital plane of the other planets at an angle
- Retrograde โ moving in the opposite direction of the other planets
- Period: 3,600 years โ one complete revolution
| Orbital Property | Sumerian Description | Modern Planet Nine Hypothesis |
|---|---|---|
| Orbit shape | Highly elliptical โ "crossing the heart" | Highly elliptical (eccentricity 0.2โ0.6) |
| Period | 3,600 years (1 SAR) | 10,000โ20,000 years |
| Inclination | Crosses ecliptic | ~30ยฐ off ecliptic |
| Perigee | Between Mars and Jupiter | 200โ300 AU from Sun |
| Direction | Retrograde ("crossing against") | Uncertain / retrograde possible |
| Moons | Multiple โ "the bow" and "the spear" | Expected โ captured KBOs |
The SAR Unit:
In Sumerian mathematics, the SAR was a numerical unit equal to 3,600. It was used to measure:
- 1 SAR = 3,600 years (celestial)
- 1 SAR = 3,600 shekels (weight)
- 1 SAR = 3,600 kur (volume)
- 1 SAR = 3,600 (pure number)
But the SAR was also used to measure the lifespans of the Anunnaki gods. The Sumerian King List records kings who ruled for absurdly long periods:
"After the kingship descended from heaven, the kingship was in Eridug. In Eridug, Alulim became king; he ruled for 28,800 years. Alaljar ruled for 36,000 years."
These are SAR multiples โ 8 SAR (28,800 years) and 10 SAR (36,000 years). Sitchin argued that the Sumerian King List was not recording human kings. It was recording Anunnaki rulers โ beings from Nibiru, for whom one year on their home planet was equal to 3,600 Earth years.
The implication: Anunnaki who lived hundreds of thousands of Earth years were simply experiencing normal lifespans by Nibiru's standards โ 50 to 100 Nibiru-years.
| Figure | Earth Years | Nibiru Years (SAR) |
|---|---|---|
| Alulim | 28,800 | 8 |
| Alaljar | 36,000 | 10 |
| Enki (in legends) | ~144,000 | ~40 |
| Biblical Patriarchs | ~700โ900 | ~0.2โ0.25 |
4. The Collision โ Tiamat โ Earth + Asteroid Belt¶
The Enuma Elish tells the story of a cosmic war. But Sitchin argued it was a cosmic collision โ and the evidence is written in plain sight across the solar system.
Tiamat (from the Sumerian TI.AMA.TUM โ "The Maiden of Life") was a large watery planet that orbited between Mars and Jupiter. When Nibiru first entered the solar system, its orbit brought it directly through Tiamat's path.
One of Nibiru's moons โ the "bow" or "spear" โ struck Tiamat, shattering it:
"The Lord raised the bow, his weapon, and said: 'Now I will cut Tiamat in two โ I will split her like a shellfish!' He struck her with the club โ he split her in two. One half he set up as a covering for the heavens โ He fixed a bolt, he stationed a guard. The other half โ he trampled the earth beneath her."
Sitchin's reading:
- The upper half of Tiamat was pulverized into the asteroid belt (between Mars and Jupiter)
- The lower half was displaced into a new orbit closer to the Sun โ becoming Earth
- Tiamat's waters became Earth's oceans โ "the waters above and the waters below"
- The Kuiper Belt and scattered disc objects are the debris field of the collision
The scientific corroboration:
- The asteroid belt contains a mass gap โ there should be a full planet there, but there isn't
- The Earth has an anomalously large moon โ consistent with a catastrophic collision (the Giant Impact Hypothesis)
- Earth's water content is anomalously high for an inner solar system planet
- The Earth's crust is geologically younger than the rest of the solar system
- The asteroid belt composition matches what you'd expect from a shattered watery planet
| Feature | Solar System Anomaly | Tiamat Collision Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Asteroid belt mass | Only 4% of what a full planet should have | Tiamat was shattered |
| Earth's water | Too much for inner solar system | Inherited from Tiamat |
| Earth's Moon | Too large for Earth's size | Formed from collision debris |
| Kuiper Belt / Oort Cloud | Icy bodies at system edge | Tiamat's outer fragments |
| Earth's crust | Young โ ~4.0 Ga (not 4.5 Ga) | Resurfaced after collision |
5. Modern Planet X / Planet Nine Searches โ The Hunt Continues¶
Mainstream astronomy has been searching for a large trans-Neptunian planet since the 19th century.
The Timeline of the Search¶
| Year | Researcher | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| 1846 | Urbain Le Verrier | Neptune discovered โ but its orbit is perturbed |
| 1905 | Percival Lowell | Predicts Planet X beyond Neptune |
| 1930 | Clyde Tombaugh | Discovers Pluto โ too small to explain perturbations |
| 1983 | IRAS Satellite | Detects an unidentified "mystery object" in deep space |
| 1992 | Jewitt & Luu | First Kuiper Belt Object discovered โ thousands follow |
| 2003 | Mike Brown | Sedna discovered โ highly elliptical orbit suggests a massive perturber |
| 2014 | Sheppard & Trujillo | 2012 VPโโโ suggests a massive planet at ~250 AU |
| 2016 | Batygin & Brown | Formal Planet Nine hypothesis โ 10 Earth masses, 200โ800 AU orbit |
| 2024 | Batygin & Brown | Updated orbital model โ narrowing the search area |
The Caltech Prediction (Batygin & Brown, 2016โPresent)¶
In January 2016, Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown โ both at Caltech โ published a paper titled "Evidence for a Distant Giant Planet in the Solar System" in The Astronomical Journal.
Their evidence:
- Six Kuiper Belt Objects have orbits that cluster together in a statistically impossible way โ probability less than 0.0001% by chance
- The clustering can only be explained by a massive unseen planet herding them into alignment
- The predicted planet has:
- Mass: 5โ10 Earth masses
- Orbit: 200โ800 AU from the Sun
- Period: 10,000โ20,000 years (Sitchin said 3,600 โ but Nibiru's orbit may have changed after capture)
- Eccentricity: 0.2โ0.6 (elongated)
- Inclination: ~30ยฐ off the ecliptic
"There are now five different lines of observational evidence pointing to the existence of Planet Nine. If you were to remove this explanation and imagine another object that is responsible for all of these phenomena, it would have to be an incredible coincidence." โ Konstantin Batygin (2024 interview)
The IRAS Sighting (1983)¶
The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) scanned the sky in 1983 and detected a mysterious object described in press reports at the time:
"A heavenly body possibly as large as the giant planet Jupiter and possibly so close to Earth that it would be part of this solar system has been found in the direction of the constellation Orion by an orbiting telescope..." โ The Washington Post, December 30, 1983
IRAS project scientist Gerry Neugebauer confirmed: "It could be as large as Jupiter and is so close to Earth that it would be part of the solar system."
Within weeks, the story was retracted and the data reclassified. NASA denied there was anything unusual.
Sitchin's followers point to this as evidence of a cover-up โ Nibiru was detected, confirmed by the principal investigator, and then the findings were buried.
6. The SAR Unit โ Why the Anunnaki Lived So Long¶
The Sumerian numerical system is based on the sexagesimal system (base-60), which survives today in our 60-minute hours, 360-degree circles, and the 12-hour clock. At the heart of this system is the SAR โ the number 3,600.
| Unit | Value | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| 1 MU | 1 year | Earth year |
| 1 SAR | 3,600 MU | Nibiru year |
| 1 NER | 600 MU | ⅙ of a Nibiru year |
| 1 SOSS | 60 MU | 1/60 of a Nibiru year |
The Sumerian King List records antediluvian rulers with impossibly long reigns. Mainstream scholars call them mythology. Sitchin called them Anunnaki kings measured in Nibiru-years.
| Antediluvian Ruler | Earth Years (Text) | SAR Conversion | Leadership Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alulim | 28,800 | 8 SAR | First Anunnaki ruler of Eridu |
| Alaljar | 36,000 | 10 SAR | Second ruler |
| En-men-lu-ana | 43,200 | 12 SAR | Ruler of Bad-tibira |
| En-men-gal-ana | 28,800 | 8 SAR | Ruler of Bad-tibira |
| Dumuzid | 36,000 | 10 SAR | Shepherd god |
| Ubara-Tutu | 18,600 | ~5.16 SAR | Father of Ziusudra (Noah) |
The Great Flood is placed at the transition between these antediluvian rulers and the post-diluvial kings โ representing Nibiru's last perigee, which triggered massive tidal disruption on Earth.
Why this matters: If the Anunnaki were beings whose biology was calibrated to a 3,600-year orbital period, then a 50-year Anunnaki lifespan (measured in Nibiru-years) would be 180,000 Earth years โ consistent with the Sumerian King List figures. They weren't gods cheating death. They were beings from a different planet with a different clock.
Comparison Table: Sumerian Knowledge vs. Modern Astronomy¶
| Claim | Sumerian Source | Modern Scientific Corroboration | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uranus exists and is visible | KAK.SI.DI on Sumerian star lists | Discovered 1781 (reflected light from rings?) | Confirmed |
| Neptune exists | EN.TI.MASH.MASH | Discovered 1846 | Confirmed |
| Pluto exists | UDU.KUNGA โ "The Plow Star" | Discovered 1930 | Confirmed |
| Asteroid belt exists | Tiamat's shattered remains | First asteroid (Ceres) discovered 1801 | Confirmed |
| Large planet beyond Neptune | Nibiru โ "Planet of Crossing" | Planet Nine hypothesis (Batygin & Brown 2016) | Predicted |
| Planet has 3,600-year orbit | SAR unit in Sumerian math and King List | Current estimate: 10,000โ20,000 years (may have changed) | Debated |
| Planet orbits retrograde / inclined | Described as "crossing against" | Predicted ~30ยฐ inclination | Plausible |
| Planet collided with Tiamat | Enuma Elish Tablets IVโV | Giant Impact Hypothesis (Moon formation, ~4.5 Ga) | Parallel theory |
| Beings from Nibiru lived long Earth lives | King List in SAR units | Biologically consistent with longer orbital period | Theoretical |
| Anunnaki visited Earth | Literally thousands of Sumerian texts | No mainstream acceptance | Controversial |
The Aha Moment¶
The Sumerians did not discover Nibiru by observing the sky โ they were told about it by the beings who lived there.
| Evidence | What it proves |
|---|---|
| Uranus, Neptune, Pluto listed by Sumerians 3,800+ years before telescopes | They had access to knowledge humans could not have generated independently |
| Enuma Elish describes a giant planet entering the solar system and shattering Tiamat | A creation narrative that perfectly explains the asteroid belt, Earth's water, and the Moon-forming impact |
| Nibiru's 3,600-year orbit encoded in the SAR unit โ the same unit used for Anunnaki lifespans | Calibrated to a non-Earth time scale |
| Modern Planet Nine searches confirm a large, distant, inclined planet beyond Neptune | The Sumerians were right โ it's there |
| IRAS (1983) detected a Jupiter-sized object โ then the data was classified | The establishment knows and is not telling |
The search for Planet Nine is the search for Nibiru. The Caltech astronomers are closing in on it. The Sumerians recorded its orbit 4,000 years ago. The only missing piece is the date of its next return.
And when it comes โ when the telescope finds it โ the official story will have to admit that the ancient Sumerians knew about it all along.
